DSC_0001 is an unconventional photobook of which only 5 will be produced. It is a physical manifestation of my archive of photographs saved on my hard drives with the filename DSC_0001. DSC0001 is the name of the book but also the name of the image files that is the content of the book. The images in the book are all the first image on the memory card, or rather in fact the first one on the counting cycle of the camera/memory card. The images in the book are consequently randomized as they were selected solely based on their name. This automatic selection process has generated a selection of sometimes private images that were not necessarily meant for public viewing.
This project also offers insight into the arbitrary archiving system of cameras. Older images from my harddrives are overrepresented because my first DSLR camera would only count to 999 while the cameras that came after would count to 9999. In the end what interests me is not the possible qualitative value of the photo but the physical manifestation of digital images.
The cover shows a color photograph of my harddrives stacked on top of eachother. The book is designed so one can only see half of each photograph facing half of another photograph.
